About this service

What a clinic can do for an ear infection

Ear infections usually cause earache, a full or blocked feeling and muffled hearing. An outer ear infection (otitis externa) affects the ear canal and often follows swimming or scratching inside the ear. Middle ear infections sit behind the eardrum and are more common in children. Many clear up on their own within about 3 days.

The clinics below list ear infections among their services. Depending on who you see, that could mean examining the ear with an otoscope, gently cleaning discharge and debris out of the canal so prescribed drops can reach the skin, or telling you where to go for treatment. Not every clinician can prescribe medicines, so ask what's included before you book.

Wax removal is usually put off until an infection has settled, and irrigation isn't used on an infected ear. If you can't tell which problem you have, our guide on telling wax and infection apart can help.

See a GP or call NHS 111 if

  • you have a high temperature or feel very unwell
  • the pain is severe, or the skin around your ear is swollen
  • fluid, pus or blood is coming out of your ear
  • your hearing changes suddenly, or symptoms haven't improved after 3 days
