About this service

What causes noise in your ears

Hearing ringing, buzzing, humming or whooshing that isn't coming from around you is called tinnitus. It's common, and for many people it comes and goes. Causes include age-related hearing loss, loud noise, ear infections and a build-up of ear wax.

Wax is one of the easier causes to deal with. When it blocks the ear canal, the noise often eases once the wax has been removed. Our guide to ear wax and tinnitus covers how to tell whether wax is behind it.

The clinics below list ear noise among their services. An appointment might include looking in your ears, a hearing test and removing any wax, with advice on managing tinnitus that doesn't go away, such as sound therapy or hearing aids. Ask what's included when you book.

When tinnitus needs a GP

See a GP if it keeps coming back, is getting worse, beats in time with your pulse or is affecting your sleep or mood. Ask for an urgent appointment or call NHS 111 if it started after a head injury, or comes with sudden hearing loss, weakness in your face or a spinning feeling.
