Excessive ear wax disturbs 1 in 15 in the UK and can from time to time be assumed to be permanent hearing impairment.
The build up of ear wax is a benign process to protect your ears from foreign bodies.
Ear wax is there for a reason. It keeps the skin of the ear canal healthy and normally works its own way out. Trouble starts when it builds up and blocks the canal: your hearing goes muffled, the ear feels full, and some people get itching, earache, ringing or dizziness.
Softening drops are the usual first step. The NHS suggests 2 to 3 drops of medical-grade olive or almond oil, 3 to 4 times a day for 3 to 5 days, unless you might have a hole in your eardrum. If the ear is still blocked after that, book in for removal with a clinic in Pendlebury.
Try not to dig the wax out with cotton buds or fingers. They tend to push it deeper and can scratch the canal, which makes it harder to remove. Our guide to the signs of ear wax build-up explains what to look out for.
