Excessive ear wax disturbs 1 out of every 15 people in the UK and can from time to time be inaccurately assumed to be hearing impairment.
The over accumulation of ear wax is a normal phenomenon to guard your ears from the harmful intrusion of dirt and other small objects.
Ear wax is there for a reason. It keeps the skin of the ear canal healthy and normally works its own way out. Trouble starts when it builds up and blocks the canal: your hearing goes muffled, the ear feels full, and some people get itching, earache, ringing or dizziness.
Softening drops are the usual first step. The NHS suggests 2 to 3 drops of medical-grade olive or almond oil, 3 to 4 times a day for 3 to 5 days, unless you might have a hole in your eardrum. If the ear is still blocked after that, book in for removal with a clinic in Manchester.
Try not to dig the wax out with cotton buds or fingers. They tend to push it deeper and can scratch the canal, which makes it harder to remove. Our guide to the signs of ear wax build-up explains what to look out for.
