Which method will they use?
Most clinics use microsuction, and some also offer electronic irrigation. Mention a perforated eardrum, grommets or recent ear surgery when you book, as irrigation isn't suitable then.
What does the price cover?
Check whether it's for one ear or both, and whether you pay if there's little or no wax to remove. For both ears in a clinic, £45 to £100 is typical. Home visits usually cost more.
Should you soften the wax first?
Some clinics ask you to use olive oil or pharmacy drops for a few days beforehand, which can make removal quicker. Our guide explains how to use ear drops. Skip the oil if your eardrum might be perforated.
What if it doesn't all come out?
Hard, impacted wax sometimes needs a second visit. Ask whether a follow-up is included or charged separately, and when you'd need to come back.
