Too much ear wax disturbs 1 in 15 in the UK and can often be mistaken for permanent hearing loss.
The excessive production of ear wax is a benign phenomenon to protect your ears from the harmful intrusion of dirt and other small objects.
Ear wax is there for a reason. It keeps the skin of the ear canal healthy and normally works its own way out. Trouble starts when it builds up and blocks the canal: your hearing goes muffled, the ear feels full, and some people get itching, earache, ringing or dizziness.
Softening drops are the usual first step. The NHS suggests 2 to 3 drops of medical-grade olive or almond oil, 3 to 4 times a day for 3 to 5 days, unless you might have a hole in your eardrum. If the ear is still blocked after that, book in for removal with a clinic in Jedburgh.
Try not to dig the wax out with cotton buds or fingers. They tend to push it deeper and can scratch the canal, which makes it harder to remove. Our guide to the signs of ear wax build-up explains what to look out for.

Your appointment
Every clinic has its own way of doing things, and Jedburgh Clinic will talk you through theirs. This is how a typical ear wax removal appointment goes.
Some clinics suggest softening the wax with olive oil drops for a few days first, so ask when you book. Mention any ear surgery, a perforated eardrum or grommets.
The clinician asks about your symptoms, then checks both ears with an otoscope or a microscope before deciding how to remove the wax.
Microsuction is noisy but rarely painful. Some clinics use warm-water irrigation or a small instrument instead. Allow around half an hour.
Most people hear more clearly straight away. Brief dizziness or a little soreness usually settles quickly. Get help if you have pain, discharge, bleeding or worse hearing.
