Excessive ear wax is present in 1 out of every 15 people in the UK and can on occasion be inaccurately assumed to be permanent hearing loss.

The body's production of ear wax is a naturally occurring process to guard your ears from infection, instrusion and dirt.

When to book ear wax removal in North Berwick

Ear wax is there for a reason. It keeps the skin of the ear canal healthy and normally works its own way out. Trouble starts when it builds up and blocks the canal: your hearing goes muffled, the ear feels full, and some people get itching, earache, ringing or dizziness.

Softening drops are the usual first step. The NHS suggests 2 to 3 drops of medical-grade olive or almond oil, 3 to 4 times a day for 3 to 5 days, unless you might have a hole in your eardrum. If the ear is still blocked after that, book in for removal with a clinic in North Berwick.

Try not to dig the wax out with cotton buds or fingers. They tend to push it deeper and can scratch the canal, which makes it harder to remove. Our guide to the signs of ear wax build-up explains what to look out for.

Your appointment

What to expect at your appointment

Every clinic has its own way of doing things, and Dirleton Clinic will talk you through theirs. This is how a typical ear wax removal appointment goes.

Before you go

Some clinics suggest softening the wax with olive oil drops for a few days first, so ask when you book. Mention any ear surgery, a perforated eardrum or grommets.
A look inside your ears

The clinician asks about your symptoms, then checks both ears with an otoscope or a microscope before deciding how to remove the wax.
The removal

Microsuction is noisy but rarely painful. Some clinics use warm-water irrigation or a small instrument instead. Allow around half an hour.
Afterwards

Most people hear more clearly straight away. Brief dizziness or a little soreness usually settles quickly. Get help if you have pain, discharge, bleeding or worse hearing.
