Methods of ear wax removal
Calne Ear Care provides the three most safest ways of Ear Wax Removal and these are:
Microsuction - This is the safest and cleanest way of removing wax as it does not require water to remove the wax. This is normally used when the ear wax is visible in the ear canal using a Specula and Loupes.
Irrigation - Warm water is flushed through the ear canal to loosen and remove the wax. This method is used when the wax is quite far down in the ear canal and cannot be removed with the Microsuction or Manual Extraction. Loupes are also worn.
Manual Extraction - This method is used when the wax is visible in the opening of the ear canal without using a Specula or Otoscope. Loupes will be used at all times.
These methods are all safe, gentle and pain free. Ear Wax Removal is commonly recommended by the GP or Nurse if you are experiencing any of the following
- Muffled Hearing
- Feeling of Fullness in the Ear
- Mild Tinnitus
- Sudden Hearing Loss after Swimming or Showering
Most Ear Wax Removal appointments are about 30-45 minutes long including the initial consultation where medical history and consent forms are completed beforehand.
Ear wax is part of our body's natural defence system. It helps to prevent infections of the ear and catches foreign objects which may enter the ear such as dust or debris.

Small amounts of ear wax are usually fine and maintain a healthy ear canal; A larger build-up can lead to the ear being blocked, which leads to reduced hearing.
Some common symptoms of excessive ear wax are pain, itching of the ear, ringing and hearing loss.
How Ear Wax Removal in Calne can benefit you
To avoid long term damage to the ear, wax removal should not be attempted at home. Usually this leads to pushing the ear wax further into the ear canal, leading to more hearing loss and pain, and making it more difficult to remove. Avoid self-made ear wax removal methods at all costs !
